Homeowners have driven a lot of demand for shingles over the last decade. According to the National Roofing Contractors Association, the D.C. metro area leads the country in the purchase of single-pane siding, and the number of porches on U.S. homes has risen 17 percent from 2004 to 2011.
During that same time, the average dollar value of a roof job in the D.C. metro area increased from $9,921 to $10,577. And roofers’ earnings are increasing.
As roofing businesses have expanded and cut prices, the market share of homeowner-surplus roofers has declined, the National Roofing Contractors Association reports. According to the association’s 2013 annual market survey, roofers earned on average $52,172 – up 16 percent from $43,514 in 2012.
More than 12,000 roofing companies operate in this area.
